History of Prachuap Khiri Khan

Prachuap Khiri Khan was named as "Mueang Narang" in Ayutthaya era. The city was destroyed after Sri Ayuthaya was occupied by Myanmar the 2nd time. In Rattana Kosin period, King Rama II rebuilt the city around Khlong Bang Nangrom, and later moved it to "Mueang Kui". During the reign of King Rama IV, it was renamed from "Mueang Kui" to "Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan" with the government office located at the same place.

During King Rama V, "Mueang Pranburi", "Mueang Prachuap" and "Mueang Kham Nued Noppakun" were merged as "Mueang Pranburi" that was situated at the Ko Lak Bay. The Mueang Pranburi area remained and was named as Amphoe "Mueang Pran". Later, King Rama VI realized that "Mueang Pran" and "Mueang Pranburi" were miscalled. The King changed the name "Mueang Pranburi" back to "Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan" that remains till now.
